Believe it or not re:Invent 2017 is less than a month away. Soon we will all be once again maxing out our pedometers and struggling to find a decent place to eat lunch that costs less than a gently used Corolla. Whether you’re a show-floor veteran armed with a Camelback full of red bull or a fresh faced newbie just hoping not to get trampled when the doors open, we could all use a refresher when it comes to the basics.

We’ve put together this handy article to remind you where, when and what is happening. Trust us, you’ll want to have this bookmarked to glance at when day three rolls around and you’re weighted down with so many new business cards you can barely even remember your own name.

When is it?

This year, re:Invent will begin on Sunday, November 26 and will end on Friday, December 1. Registration and badge pickup officially opens to the masses on Sunday at 1pm PDT. The last event will end on Friday at 2:30 pm PDT. It’s still not too late to sign up if you need to.

Where is It?

This year’s re:Invent is taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States of America. Like most Vegas-based trade shows, re:Invent will not be confined to a single location.

Instead re:Invent will have an entire Campus with various different locations up and down the world famous Las Vegas strip. The bulk of major events are taking place at the MGM Grand, Aria, Mirage, Venetian, Palazzo, the Sands Expo Hall, the Linq Lot, and the Encore. The locations will each house their own location-specific tracks that deal with various subjects within the AWS product line.

This is the breakdown for the different locales:

MGM Grand – Business Apps, Enterprise, Security, Compliance, Identity, Windows.

Aria – Analytics & Big Data, Alexa, Container, IoT, AI & Machine Learning, and Serverless.

Mirage – Bootcamps, Certifications & Certification Exams.

Venetian / Palazzo / Sands Expo Hall – Architecture, AWS Marketplace & Service Catalog, Compute, Content Delivery, Database, DevOps, Mobile, Networking, and Storage.

Linq Lot – Alexa Hackathons, Gameday, Jam Sessions, re:Play Party, Speaker Meet & Greets.

EncoreBookable meeting space.

These locations can be separated by miles of heavily trafficked streets. Fortunately for your feet (and your wallet), Amazon is providing free shuttles that will constantly run between the venues. However, it’s always a good idea to make sure you have at least half an hour of travel time if you need to jump from one building to another.

Events & Sessions

The major keynote reveals are, of course, still being kept under wraps by the powers that be, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of publicly announced events, seminars and trainings that you can explore anytime.

The full re:Invent Session Catalog has been released  and there are over 1100 sessions on the agenda! Start figuring out which sessions you plan to attend ASAP. Things tend to fill up quickly but walk ins are always welcome to try their luck even in overbooked lecture halls. AWS veterans will tell you that even the most popular sessions will have no shows so it’s usually worth a shot to swing by a “full” event and try to snag a few empty seats

AWS has also released a handy Getting Ready for re:Invent video that covers the broad strokes of all the major sessions and upcoming events.

After Hours

Besides all of the obvious ways to spend a memorable evening in Las Vegas, re:Invent will also be a time for conference-specific fun even after the sun sets. AWS has committed to hosting several late-night sessions, workshops, chalk talks, and hands-on labs well into the evening during all nights of the show except Friday.

Follow all of our convention coverage

Once your brains reach the point where they simply can’t absorb any new knowledge there will also be plenty of good old fashioned ruckus to get into. There’s going to be the annual Pub Crawl, re:Play party, and Tatonka Challenge (which will be held at two separate locations this year). This year there will be Hands-On LEGO Activities, and a Harley Ride for you gearheads. You can also flex your athletic side in a 4K Run, a Spinning Challenge, Fitness Bootcamps, and, of course, Amazon’s traditional Broomball matches.

Stay Informed

re:Invent is a long show but it passes in the blink of an eye. The best way to maximize your time in Vegas is to stay informed (and stay hydrated). We can help you with one of those.

We will be releasing a steady stream of lists, guides and roundups to help you get the most out of every moment. Stay tuned and just remember ABHS: always bring hand sanitizer.
